EBC meets with DigitalEurope \u2013 15 October<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 15 October in Tokyo, the EBC met with Jo\u00ebl Guschker, Associate Director for International Affairs and Trade Policy at DIGITALEUROPE<\/strong>, for an engaging exchange on shared priorities under the EU-Japan Digital Partnership.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, both organisations presented their missions and ongoing work to promote innovation, strengthen digital trade relations, and advance trusted, value-based digital policies.<\/p>\n

The timing was particularly fitting, as the EBC is about to launch its new\u00a0Digital Committee<\/strong>, a platform dedicated to bringing together European companies active in Japan\u2019s digital sector. The Committee will advocate for their interests while fostering dialogue and cooperation with Japanese partners and policymakers.<\/p>\n

European digital companies operating in Japan are warmly invited to get in touch if they are interested in joining this new initiative and contributing to a stronger EU-Japan digital ecosystem!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

EBC <\/strong>Government Relations Committee Special Event with Professor<\/strong> Donald Low – 16 October<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 16 October, the EBC Government Relations Committee hosted Professor Donald Low of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for a talk titled \u201cChina\u2019s slowdown: Causes, consequences, and prospects for recovery\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Professor Low outlined the structural challenges behind China\u2019s sluggish post-pandemic recovery, including high debt, a prolonged property slump, weak consumption, and falling foreign investment. He noted that these trends have led to deflationary pressures and comparisons to Japan\u2019s \u201clost decades\u201d.<\/p>\n

He also discussed the Chinese government\u2019s strategy to foster \u201cnew quality productive forces\u201d aimed at boosting productivity and achieving technological self-sufficiency, while warning that deeper institutional reforms would be needed for sustained growth.<\/p>\n

The event concluded with a lively Q&A on Professor Low\u2019s presentation.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

EBC Insurance Committee \u2013 17 October<\/strong><\/p>\n

The EBC Insurance Committee met on 17 October to exchange views on<\/strong> cybersecurity and related risk management practices within the insurance sector<\/strong>. Members discussed current approaches to strengthening<\/strong> preparedness and response capabilities in the face of increasing cyber threats.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Key topics included\u00a0Rapid Isolation Tests,\u00a0Cyber Security Drills,\u00a0Business Continuity Plan (BCP) Drills, and\u00a0External Cyber Security Assessments. Members shared their companies\u2019 experiences and underlined the importance of regularly testing, reviewing, and updating internal procedures to maintain operational resilience. Members expressed interest in continuing to exchange best practices and in exploring possible collaboration with relevant authorities and industry associations.<\/p>\n

The Committee, chaired by Nicolas Sauvage provides a unique platform for European insurance companies to engage in peer-to-peer learning, share best practices, and stay ahead of emerging cyber and operational risks.<\/strong> Membership offers an opportunity to network with industry leaders, benchmark approaches, and collectively influence standards and guidance on critical risk management topics.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

EBC Defence Committee meets with METI – 17 October<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 17 October, the EBC Defence Committee Chair,<\/strong> Nikolaus Boltze, met with Takuya Kimura, Director of METI\u2019s Aerospace and Defence Industry Division.<\/strong>
\nThe purpose of the meeting was to introduce the activities of the Defence Committee and to exchange views on recent developments in the sector.
\nThe discussion also touched upon the upcoming EU-Japan Defence Industrial Dialogue, which both sides recognised as an important opportunity to further strengthen cooperation and mutual understanding between European and Japanese industry and government stakeholders.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Meeting between the<\/strong> EBC <\/strong>and the Deutsches Institut f\u00fcr Japanstudien (DIJ) – 20 October<\/strong><\/p>\n

The meeting brought together Franz Waldenberger, Director of the DIJ, and S\u00e9bastien Lechevalier, Visiting Research Fellow, with Valerie Moschetti representing the EBC.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0DIJ, part of the\u00a0Max Weber Foundation, is a leading German research institute conducting interdisciplinary research on\u00a0modern Japan in a global context, focusing on<\/strong> s<\/strong>ustainability, digital transformation, and knowledge production.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both organizations expressed their interest in identifying effective ways to collaborate, combining the DIJ\u2019s academic expertise with the EBC\u2019s insights from the European business community in Japan. The EBC looks forward to further developing this dialogue in the months ahead!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

EBC attends EFPIA Day 2025 at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo\u00a0– 20 October<\/strong><\/p>\n

On\u00a020 October 2025, the\u00a0EBC\u00a0was pleased to attend\u00a0EFPIA Day 2025, organised by the\u00a0European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) Japan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The event featured a\u00a0Patient Forum<\/strong> bringing together representatives from\u00a0industry,\u00a0government,\u00a0academia, and\u00a0patient organisations\u00a0to discuss the\u00a0future of healthcare in Japan, with a focus on\u00a0patient participation,\u00a0health literacy, and\u00a0access to medical information.<\/p>\n

This was followed by the\u00a08th PASE AWARD Ceremony<\/strong>, recognising outstanding initiatives in\u00a0patient advocacy and support. The reception featured remarks by\u00a0Mr. Iwaya, President of EFPIA Japan,\u00a0Mr. Hiroaki Tabata, Member of the House of Representatives, and\u00a0Mr. Thomas Gnocchi, Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation to Japan, among others.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A key theme throughout the evening was the strong alignment of\u00a0EU and Japanese interests in healthcare, and the shared commitment to supporting patients, innovation, and sustainable access to medicines.<\/p>\n

The EBC looks forward to continuing its close cooperation with\u00a0EFPIA Japan\u00a0in promoting a resilient and forward-looking healthcare partnership between the EU and Japan.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Navigating Uncertainty in Global Governance – Regional Policy Worksho<\/strong>p\u00a0– 29 October<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The upcoming one-day workshop titled\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/em>Navigating Uncertainty in Global Governance<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>co-organized by the NAVIGATOR project and the Delegation of the European Union to Japan will take place on\u00a0<\/span>29 October\u00a0<\/span>at\u00a0<\/span>Europa House\u00a0<\/span>in Minami-Azabu, Tokyo (9:00-16:30).<\/p>\n

As global governance faces growing complexity, from shifting power dynamics and evolving multilateral structures to emerging challenges in digital and health governance, this workshop will bring together leading experts to explore how countries like Japan and the EU can respond effectively. Participants will discuss how traditional and new governance frameworks, such as the G7, G20, and BRICS, can coexist and adapt to ensure both legitimacy and efficiency in global cooperation. This workshop offers a valuable opportunity to gain insights into the evolving landscape of global governance and its implications for Japan, the EU, and the broader international community.<\/p>\n
