Dear Friends of the EBC,<\/p>\n

The EBC continues to reinforce ties within the European business community in Japan, advance its policy dialogue, and provide its committees with valuable insights.<\/p>\n

Meeting with the Netherlands Embassy<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 3 December, the EBC was pleased to welcome Minister Counsellor Hans Kuijpers and Norimasa Tochibayashi from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our exchange provided an excellent moment to compare perspectives on priorities shaping both the European and Japanese business environments. We identified several areas where continued dialogue will be particularly relevant, including energy<\/strong>, defence<\/strong>, and healthcare<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

All participants expressed a strong willingness to maintain close communication as developments unfold. We look forward to further collaboration with our Dutch partners.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Strengthening European Synergies in Japan – Meeting with the SCCIJ<\/strong><\/p>\n

Also on 3 December, the EBC held a productive introductory meeting with Andrea Nava and Yasuko Taniguchi from the Swiss Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan (SCCIJ).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both organisations shared updates on ongoing committee work, advocacy priorities, and engagements with Japanese ministries. Several areas of alignment emerged, notably:<\/p>\n

-advancing regulatory reform,
\n-improving market access, and
\n-supporting European businesses operating in Japan.<\/p>\n

Our discussion also highlighted practical avenues for closer cooperation, including coordinated advocacy initiatives, reinforced information-sharing, and smoother communication channels between our organisations. The EBC looks forward to working even more closely with the SCCIJ in the year ahead.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

EBC attendance at the Euronews Debate on EU-Japan Economic Security<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 4 December, the EBC took part in the Euronews Debate \u201cBridging Continents: Europe-Japan Cooperation for Resilient Economic Security,\u201d held during METI\u2019s Global Forum Weeks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Panelists addressed a number of priorities critical to strengthening the EU-Japan partnership, such as:<\/p>\n

-building reliable and transparent supply chains,
\n-ensuring access to essential resources,
\n-promoting technological innovation and joint investment,
\n-improving communication frameworks, and
\n-supporting trusted media in countering disinformation.<\/p>\n

AI & the Future of Enterprise – A Presentation by Professor Giulio Toscani<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 8 December, the EBC had the pleasure of hosting Professor Giulio Toscani from Barcelona School of Management, who delivered a fascinating presentation on agentic AI and its implications for modern organisations. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Professor Toscani explained the different types of AI agents and the degree of autonomy individuals and companies are increasingly willing to delegate. He also highlighted a major shift toward what he calls \u201cAgents & Intelligent Transformation\u201d<\/strong>, a new paradigm where organisations rely on autonomous systems and real-time data to anticipate, optimise, and act.<\/p>\n

Sustainability Committee Briefing – Insights from E3G<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 9 December, the Sustainability Committee welcomed Yoko Mulholland from E3G, who provided a detailed overview of E3G\u2019s work in Japan and shared key messages from COP30.<\/strong><\/p>\n

She noted increasing global momentum toward the phase-out of fossil fuels, including South Korea\u2019s decision to join the Powering Past Coal Alliance<\/strong>, while pointing out that Japan remains off track<\/strong> to meet its climate targets. The new government continues to emphasise nuclear energy<\/strong> and energy security<\/strong>, with a cautious approach to renewables.<\/p>\n

A notable takeaway was the rapidly rising demand from both the public and the business community for clean and affordable renewable electricity<\/strong>. This trend presents strong opportunities for deeper EU-Japan collaboration, especially in renewable deployment, methane reduction, and climate governance.<\/p>\n

The session concluded with a forward look at 2026, highlighting progress but also the challenges that remain.<\/p>\n

This week demonstrated once again the strength of Europe\u2019s presence in Japan and the importance of continued dialogue with embassies, chambers, institutions, and experts.
