From AI and regulation to trade and business opportunities, this week\u2019s EBC activities reflect a common theme: Europe-Japan economic relations are increasingly shaped by the ability of businesses to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As new technologies transform industries, regulatory frameworks evolve and global supply chains face new pressures, European companies operating in Japan need not only to understand these developments, but also to engage with the institutions and stakeholders shaping them. The EBC continues to provide a platform for this dialogue, bringing together European and Japanese businesses, policymakers and experts to identify practical solutions and strengthen the business relationship between Europe and Japan.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/p>\n\n\n

Beyond the Hype: Making AI Work<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 30 September, the EBC Digital Committee and the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan (AHK Japan), with the support of the Delegation of the European Union to Japan, held the symposium\u00a0\u201cBeyond the Hype – Making AI Work\u201d\u00a0at Europa House in Tokyo.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The central question was a timely one:\u00a0how can companies move beyond AI experimentation and turn the technology into sustainable business value?<\/strong><\/p>\n

European and Japanese business leaders and experts discussed AI adoption and governance, the respective EU and Japanese regulatory frameworks, responsible AI and risk management, as well as practical applications in sectors ranging from\u00a0pharmaceuticals and automotive to logistics, HR and technology.<\/p>\n

The executive panel,\u00a0\u201cWhat Can Europe and Japan Learn From Each Other in AI Adoption?\u201d, highlighted an important point: while European and Japanese companies face many similar challenges, differences in regulation, corporate culture and approaches to risk can influence how quickly AI moves from experimentation to large-scale deployment.<\/p>\n

The discussion underlined the value of\u00a0learning from each other rather than developing AI strategies in isolation, particularly as companies seek to reconcile innovation with governance, security and trust.<\/p>\n

AI Regulation and Cybersecurity: What Medical Device Companies Need to Know<\/strong><\/p>\n

Also on 30 September, the EBC Medical Equipment & IVD Committee held a seminar at Gate City Osaki on\u00a0\u201cLatest Trends in AI Regulation and Cybersecurity for Medical Devices in Europe.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speakers from T\u00dcV Rheinland Japan provided an overview of the rapidly evolving European regulatory landscape, including requirements concerning\u00a0AI and cybersecurity for medical devices, with particular attention to IEC 81001-5-1 and other relevant requirements.<\/p>\n

More than\u00a070 participants\u00a0attended despite the rainy weather, including representatives of EBC member companies, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA), and other industry stakeholders.<\/p>\n

For companies developing or marketing medical devices internationally, the challenge is no longer simply to comply with product-specific regulations.\u00a0AI, cybersecurity and medical-device regulation are increasingly interconnected, requiring companies to consider these requirements early in the product-development process.<\/p>\n

The seminar provided a valuable opportunity to improve understanding of European requirements and to encourage\u00a0greater regulatory cooperation and reliance between Japan and Europe.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Strengthening Cyprus-Japan and EU-Japan Business Ties<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 5 October, the EBC was pleased to meet with\u00a0Dr Constantinos Kombos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, during his visit to Tokyo. The meeting brought together\u00a0H.E. Yannis Michaelides, Ambassador of Cyprus to Japan; H.E. Olga Kliamaki, Ambassador of Greece to Japan; Tony Andriotis, President of the Greek Chamber of Commerce, also representing Cypriot businesses; Michael Mroczek, President of the Swiss Chamber and former EBC Board President; and Christos Makiyama, venture developer, angel investor and tech ecosystem strategist focused on connecting deep-tech ecosystems in Japan and Europe.<\/p>\n

The EBC presented its work to support European companies operating in Japan and address\u00a0non-tariff barriers, while exchanging views on the current business environment and the challenges facing European companies. Japan is an important market for European businesses, and maintaining an open dialogue with Japanese authorities and stakeholders is essential to ensuring that European companies can compete and grow in a\u00a0fair, transparent and predictable business environment.<\/p>\n

The discussion also highlighted the potential to further develop\u00a0Cyprus-Japan economic relations, including in the maritime sector, where both countries have established economic links and areas of common interest.<\/p>\n

The meeting was a valuable opportunity to exchange perspectives and explore how stronger engagement can contribute to closer\u00a0Cyprus-Japan and EU-Japan economic ties.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Partner Event: Tackling Online Counterfeiting and Fraudulent Advertising – 26 October | Delegation of the European Union to Japan<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the\u00a0European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO)\u00a0will organise a joint event,\u00a0\u201cStrengthening Cooperation Against Online Counterfeiting and Fraudulent Advertising: From Detection to Enforcement,\u201d\u00a0on 26 October at the Delegation of the European Union to Japan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As counterfeiting increasingly moves online, enforcement authorities, platforms and rights holders face a common challenge:\u00a0how to identify infringements quickly and ensure that action can be taken across borders.
\nThe event will bring together public authorities, digital platforms, industry and rights holders to discuss practical approaches to online IP enforcement, including:<\/p>\n
