EBC Newsletter – November 9, 2022

From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

Now Japan reopened its borders, the European Business Council is investigating to better understand the difficulties encountered by European companies and investors to do business in Japan. For this purpose, we are launching a survey,  with a very simple structure, it will take you 7 minutes to fill in the questionnaire. Your responses have a great importance for the improvement of our future business environment in Japan. Thank you for completing the survey by November 14th.

One of the main activities of the EBC is to monitor the Japanese business environment. The EBC White Paper, now digital, compiles all issues faced by European industry and provides recommendations addressed to the Japanese Government for improving the situation. On 24 November, the EBC invites you to the launching of the 2022 White Paper. Haitze Siemers, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Japan, and Michael Mroczek, President of the EBC Board, will open the Briefing. Six representatives of our committees will in detail present and explain the issues and recommendations that cover their respective sector.

The EBC is a member of the European Business Organisation Worldwide Network. Today, we would like to share with you an invitation to a webinar organised by the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea on “G-20 Countries’ Decarbonizations Strategies and Implications for Korea”. If you would like to join, please just register.

We hope you stay positive and healthy during this difficult time.

What’s in the Media

  • Japan’s cabinet approved Tuesday an extra budget for the current fiscal year to spend 29.09 trillion yen on an economic package designed to mitigate the pain on households and businesses of rising prices, exacerbated by a weaker yen.
To secure the necessary funding, the government will issue bonds worth 22.85 trillion yen, putting fiscal restoration on the backburner further despite its debt already being more than twice the size of its economy. (Japan Today)

  • The government plans to compile defense-related budget requests under a new “comprehensive defense budget” framework in a bid to strengthen defense capabilities, according to government sources.
Under the new framework, the government aims to secure defense-related budgets across government ministries and agencies, centered around the National Security Secretariat, and compile a comprehensive defense budget equivalent to at least 2% of the nation’s gross domestic product in five years. (The Japan News)

  • The Digital Agency plans to create a catalog of digital technologies owned by private-sector companies and make it public in fiscal 2023, according to sources.
The catalog will be used to review so-called analog regulations — such as requiring that infrastructure be visually inspected to verify safety — while supporting the development of sales channels for small and midsize companies and startups with superior digital technology. (The Japan News)
