Last week the EBC has been busy organising events. Our conferences or Briefings report on our Committees’ activity and explain the latest Japanese or European policies and regulations impacting European companies.

  • Sustainable Technology Day (17 February 2023, 16:00-17:30), organised by UNIDO’s Investment and Technology Promotion Office in Tokyo (UNIDO ITPO TOKYO) and the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation. It is a pitching and networking event to connect EU and Japanese companies looking to work together in sustainable projects in Africa.
  • English translation of the Startup Five Year Development Plan of the Government of Japan, released today on 6 February 2023.

What’s in the Media

  • The economy ministry plans to introduce a system in which electric power generated by solar panels on the roofs of company buildings, factories and warehouses will be purchased at 20% higher prices than power generated from panels on the ground. (The Japan News)
  • The government is considering enacting legislation to allow offshore wind farms to be built in Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
    Offshore wind farms are currently being built in Japan’s territorial waters within 12 nautical miles (around 22 kilometers) from the coast. (The Asahi Shimbun)
  • The electrification of the car industry is gathering pace, particularly in Europe, where the sale of new cars running on petrol and diesel will end in 2035.
    But challenges remain around their production, affordability and whether enough infrastructure can be put in place to persuade drivers to make the switch. (Japan Today)
