From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

We are pleased to share with you some highlights from the European Business Council’s activities last week and upcoming events from the EBC and other organisations.

On 9 October, the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations in Japan (EFPIA Japan, member of the EBC) held its EFPIA Day Patient Forum and the EBC was honoured to attend. The event featured a conference on the future of healthcare in Japan, led by the voices of patients. This was followed by the PASE Award Ceremony, where patient groups were recognised for their outstanding contributions.
The day concluded with a reception involving representatives from embassies, Japanese authorities, the pharmaceutical industry and patient groups. Speeches were made by the Chairs of EFPIA Japan and EFPIA, as well as the Ambassadors of the European Union, Belgium and Denmark.

Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen, President, EPFIA
Takahiro Iwaya, Chair, EFPIA Japan

Peter Taksøe-Jensen, Ambassador, Embassy of Denmark
Jean-Eric Paquet, Ambassador, European Union to Japan

That same day, the EBC also participated in the Swiss-Japan Business Forum, which addressed the critical issue of biodiversity loss under the theme “Biodiversity in Crisis: How Can We Drive the Transformation Towards Regenerative Economies?”. The forum brought together leaders from business, academia, and government from Switzerland and Japan, fostering meaningful discussions on the urgent need for a nature-positive economy. The forum ended with an inspiring call to action, showcasing the power of collective efforts in regenerating nature and building resilience, and the participants were able to share their experiences during a wonderful networking session.

On 17 October (4:00pm), there are still a few seats available for the second EBC Digital Automotive Summit, in cooperation with the German Chamber of Commerce in Japan, the Delegation of the European Union to Japan and the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation. This will unite industry, policy, and advocacy leaders from the Japanese and European Automotive Industry for a critical conversation on the future of the sector. With keynotes from expert speakers, we’ll explore how digitalisation and rapidly changing markets are shaping the industry’s trajectory. Through the Japan-Europe lens, we’ll dive into disruptive innovations like Generative AI and discuss the role of AI, data policies, and cybersecurity in the EU-Japan Digital Partnership – a collaboration fostering innovation and our digital future.

On 24 October, the City of Osaka will hold (in Japanese) an “Osaka Investment Promotion Seminar” in Ochanomizu, Tokyo, as the countdown to the Osaka-Kansai Expo begins. With less than a year to go, this seminar will explore the economic and social ripple effects of the Expo, as well as Osaka’s growing appeal as a hub for business, tourism, and innovation.
