February 24, 2026 EBC Government Relations Committee Meeting: February 20, 2026
Notes from GR meeting, 20FEB
The EBC Government Relations (GR) Committee met on 20 February 2026 to discuss recent political developments in Japan and their implications for European businesses. Particular attention was given to the outcome of the recent parliamentary election, in which the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Sanae Takaichi, secured a strong supermajority in the House of Representatives. Members noted that this result gives the government significant legislative authority and is likely to lead to a stable but more centralized policymaking environment.
The Committee also discussed possible new legislation related to foreign influence. Japan does not currently have a dedicated foreign agents registration law, but there have been renewed discussions about introducing transparency measures, sometimes linked to debate around a “Spy Prevention Law” (スパイ防止法). While no concrete bill has yet been adopted, members agreed that such developments should be closely monitored, as they could affect companies engaged in policy advocacy.
Finally, the Committee reviewed ongoing discussions about introducing a lobbying registry in Japan. At present, Japan does not have a comprehensive statutory lobbying registration system. However, there is increasing interest in improving transparency around lobbying activities. The Committee agreed that any future regulatory changes in this area would be important for members to follow closely.
Next meeting is scheduled for 7 April from 12H30.
