EBC Government Relations Committee Meeting: April 7, 2026

EBC Government Relations Committee Meeting: April 7, 2026

Notes from GR meeting, 07APR2026

The EBC Government Relations (GR) Committee met on 7 April 2026 to discuss recent political developments in Japan and their potential implications for members.

A key topic was the ongoing discussion surrounding a possible Foreign Agents Registration Law, which forms part of the agreement between the LDP and Isshin and is linked to broader considerations related to an anti-spy framework.

At this stage, it remains unclear which ministry will take the lead on this initiative. Committee members noted that responsibility could potentially fall under the Cabinet Office, the Ministry of Justice, the National Police Agency, or the Cabinet Secretariat.

The Committee agreed to reach out to relevant political contacts to gather further information. In parallel, it will engage with other stakeholders, including the ACCJ, as well as the British and Canadian Chambers of Commerce. Demonstrating the potential impact on Japanese stakeholders will be essential in these efforts.

The next meeting is scheduled for 23 June at 12:30.
