On 21 April, the EBC took advantage of the presence in Japan of Mr. Niedermark, Member of the Executive Board of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie & former CEO of the German Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, and Mr. Beyrer, Director General of BusinessEuropeto organise a talk on the challenges facing Europe today.

On 10 May from 9:00am, the EBC Logistics & Freight Committee will hold a meeting at the EBC (also remote option). If you are a European company concerned by logistics issues in Japan and potentially interested in joining our committee, the EBC would like to invite you to take part in our discussions. Space.Japan, a project created by the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation with the aim to support cooperation in Space-related Industries both upstream and downstream, and a promising startup from Portugal, Spotlite, are pleased to invite you to a webinar in English: “Risk Monitoring from Space” on 10 May 2023, 17:00-17:30.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has compiled a research of “Case Studies Relating to the use of Inbound M&A Transactions – Case Studies of Japanese Companies that Leveraged Foreign Capitals for Corporate Reforms, Management Enhancement and Dramatic Growth”. METI will also organise an online briefing to explain this research on 17 May.

What’s in the Media

  • Japan’s immigration authorities on Monday proposed expanding the scope of a blue-collar skilled workers visa that effectively allows holders to stay in the country indefinitely in a possible major shift in its foreign labor policy. (Japan Today)
  • The Japanese government said Monday it will add nine more sectors, including semiconductors and storage batteries, to its list of core areas in which foreign investment is limited due to national security concerns, starting on May 24. (The Mainichi)
  • Farm minister Tetsuro Nomura on Friday asked his European Union counterpart to lift restrictions placed on some of Japan’s agricultural exports following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear plant disaster. (The Mainichi)
  • Japan’s greenhouse gas emissions rose 2.0% in the year through March 2022, the first increase in eight years, government data showed on Friday, as industrial activity picked up from the COVID-19 pandemic-induced slump. (The Japan News)
