EBC Newsletter – February 24, 2021

From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

On 19 February, the EBC, together with the ACCJ, the BCCJ and the CCCJ, has issued a joint statement on the Easing of Re-Entry Restrictions on Foreign Residents in Japan. It points out that Japan should re-start issuing visas to essential personnel when the State of Emergency is lifted. This is vital not only for foreign companies, but also for Japanese companies, and even more so for the Japanese economy.

The invitation to our next EBC briefing on 9 March is open. In this webinar, we will hear from two experts from Roche and AstraZeneca on both COVID-19 detection and vaccination. You can already register and send your questions at [email protected]

For the latest information regarding vaccination in Japan, you can refer to the English webpage of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet.

We would also like to share with you two events organised by the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation:

Enjoy your reading!

We hope you stay positive and healthy during this difficult time.

Statement on the Easing of Re-Entry Restrictions on Foreign Residents in Japan

The EBC, together with the ACCJ, the BCCJ and the CCCJ, has issued a joint statement on the lifting of the re-entry restriction for non-Japanese residents and the current entry restrictions for non-residents. The statement gives praise to the Japanese Government for allowing non-Japanese residents to re-enter Japan under the same conditions as Japanese citizens.

At the same time, the statement also points out that Japan should re-start issuing visas to essential personnel when the State of Emergency is lifted. This is vital not only for foreign companies, but also for Japanese companies, and even more so for the Japanese economy.

EBC Briefing on COVID-19 detection and vaccination – March 9, 16:00-17:30

Japan, while figures have been volatile, has seen fewer cases compared to other countries, among them Europe. On the other hand, compared to Europe, Japan has been late to the party in terms of starting its vaccination programme.

In this webinar, we will hear from two experts on both detection and vaccination of the COVID-19:

Mr. Shinichi Eda of Roche, member of the EBC Medical Equipment and Diagnostics Committee, will offer his expertise and insight into the detection of the corona virus through PCR-testing and anti-gen testing.
Mr. Stefan Woxstrőm, President of Astra Zeneca Japan, will talk about the vaccine and vaccination. As we all know, Astra Zeneca has been at the centre of the development of one of the vaccines.

When: 9 March from 16:00
Where: a Webex link will be presented at confirmation of sign-up
How to register and send your questions: [email protected]

Looking forward to seeing you!

EBC White Paper

The EBC published its annual document on the Japanese regulatory business environment last July.

This year’s White Paper is called “Strengthening partnerships – in crisis and opportunity alike” . The opportunity is of course referring to the EU-Japan EPA that entered into force on February 1, 2019. Unfortunately, at the same time the COVID -19 crisis struck the world.

We are, however, confident that with our recommendations, the European and Japanese economies and companies will continue to prosper.
