From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

On 19 July, the EBC Legal Services Committee met with the Judicial System Department of the Ministry of Justice. The EBC side was led by Tony Andriotis, Chair of the committee. The purpose behind the visit was to re-introduce the committee and to lay the foundation for a discussion on issues that foreign lawyers and law firms face in Japan. The meeting was held in a very positive spirit with quite a lot of laughs around the table. Both parties agreed to continue the close contact and to cooperate on a number of issues.

We are pleased to announce that the 19th North America-Europe Golf Challenge in Japan 2023 will be played on Friday, 6 October at the Atsugi Kokusai C.C. in Kanagawa Prefecture. This is an event jointly organised by EBC, ACCJ and CCCJ and run by a task-force appointed by the organisations. It has a 20-year history and has always been a great success as it is a unique opportunity to network with businessmen from various nationalities. Save the date on your agenda and register for the event!
If you have any questions, please contact  Antti Kunnas (FCCJ) on behalf of the Cup Task Force.

What’s in the Media

  • The number of working women in Japan reached a record 30.35 million in 2022, marking an increase of 1.22 million from five years earlier, a government survey showed Friday. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications survey also showed the employment rate among women hit a record high of 53.2 percent, partly attributed to government efforts to help mothers work while raising children. • Energy ministers from the group of 20 nations meeting in India Saturday failed to agree on a roadmap to phase down the use of fossil fuels in the global energy mix. A final statement after the meeting did not even mention coal, a major contributor to global warming. (Japan Today)
  • To encourage new startups to enter the defense industry, the Defense Ministry and the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry will hold a joint briefing session for private companies from this summer, according to sources. The move is aimed at utilizing the space, cyber and other advanced technologies possessed by companies to strengthen defense capabilities as well as to broaden and revitalize the base of the defense industry.  (The Japan News)
