From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

On 28 June, the EBC Railway Committee met with Tokyo Metro to discuss the forthcoming workshop between the EBC Railway Committee and selected Japanese railway operators. This workshop is part of an ongoing dialogue that the EBC has been conducting for over ten years, covering topics such as procurement, conformity assessment schemes, AI, cybersecurity, etc. Over the years, there have been many opportunities to exchange information and opinions on transport related policies in both Japan and the EU. The Railway Committee remains committed to improving the regulatory framework in Japan.
If your company is interested in these activities, please reach out to the EBC!

On 9 July, our stakeholder, the Ireland Japan Chamber of Commerce and Nikkei are co-hosting an exclusive speaker and networking session on “Japan’s Tourist Industry: Change in the Last 10 Years and What’s Beyond”.
Over the past decade, Japan’s tourism industry has shifted from a domestic orientation to an international tourist orientation. This shift is not just a change in one sector, but a transformation that could have far-reaching effects across industries. In this event, Nikkei Asia Editor Yuichi Nitta will delve into how the shift unlocked untapped markets in Japan, presenting a unique chance for growth and development. A networking session will be held shortly after the presentation. Spots are limited, you can register here.

The EBC team is looking forward to hearing from you soon!

What’s in the Media

  • The Japanese government is set to overhaul its international symposium on women’s empowerment to focus more on building up the next generation and strengthening cooperation with the United Nations, sources close to the matter said Sunday. The move comes as the government has deemed it necessary for the World Assembly for Women, launched in 2014, to adopt a more practical approach by involving men and younger generations to address issues related to women and gender. (Japan Today)
  • The government indicated Thursday that Japan is set to obligate major manufacturers to utilize recycled plastics as part of efforts to cut plastic pollution and promote decarbonization. The government aims to revise the law on the promotion of effective utilization of resources as early as at next year’s regular Diet session, with the revision expected to request manufacturers to set specific targets and report their achievements on a regular basis. (Kyodo News+)
  • This summer, the government intends to launch the first agricultural-sector emission trading project under its bilateral trading mechanism. The project will see Japan providing the Philippines and Vietnam with technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in exchange for credits for the emissions that are cut. (The Japan News)
