Dear Friends of the EBC,

The EBC, through members of its Asset Management and Banking & Insurance committees, met with a delegation of the European Parliament on 15 May to discuss issues covering the three sectors. The parliamentarians are in Japan for discussions with Japanese politicians and the Government. The Economic & Monetary Affairs Committee is led by Irene Tinagli, with other members being Markus Ferber, Ludek Niedermayer, Dragos Pislaru, and Michiel Hoogeven. More details here.

The EBC HR Committee will meet on 25 May from 9:30 AM, both in-person and online. The Committee has previously discussed and exchanged best practices on topics such as remote working, remote on-boarding, remuneration, equal pay, visas & the border restrictions, and digitalisation & AI. MOFA is organising an online Government Procurement Seminar for Fiscal Year 2023 on 13 June, 10:00-13:30. You will get information on procurements of telecommunications and medical technology products and services not less than 100 thousand SDRs; procurement of computer products and services above 800 thousand SDRs; procurement of other products and services controlled by the Agreement on Government Procurement not less than 800 thousand SDRs.

What’s in the Media

  • Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Monday closer macroeconomic policy coordination is needed with the Bank of Japan as the government seeks to examine whether Japan can attain sustainable and stable wage growth and avoid sliding back into deflation. (The Mainichi)
  • Global electric vehicle sales are set to climb 35 percent in 2023 from the previous year to a record 14 million units, backed by robust growth in China, Europe and the United States, the International Energy Agency said in a recent report. (Japan Today)
  • The government is considering expanding the scope of duties foreign carers can perform to alleviate chronic labor shortages in the nursing care sector, it has been learned.The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry plans to review current regulations, including a rule that blocks foreign workers from conducting home visits.   • Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced that the government will set up a strategic council to discuss the use of artificial intelligence amid rapid advances in generative AI technology, as exemplified by ChatGPT.  (The Japan News)
