EBC Newsletter – September 28, 2022

From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

While in New York for the U.N. General Assembly, Prime Minister Kishida announced the lifting of Japan’s entry restriction on October 11. From this date, independent tourists will be able to enter the country without a visa and the daily 50,000 arrival cap will be abolished. The EBC welcomes this decision and will continue its efforts to improve the trade and investment environment for European companies in Japan.

We still have a few tickets available for the EBC / ACCJ / CCCJ Golf Tournament held on 14 October. Feel free to register if you are looking for a great opportunity to network with businesspeople from various countries!

Let me also share with you the following in-person and online events:

The BLCCJ invites members of the EBC to attend a webinar on “Smart and Sustainable buildings: from Brussels, the Capital of Europe, to Asia on 30 September, 18:00-19:00. In this webinar the panel of speakers includes industry leaders who are experts in their fields across Belgium and Asia. They will share the pillars, elements, principles, methods, designs, benefits and goals as well as examples of sustainable/green construction.

The Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) – a platform of wisdom for discussing among industry-academia-government leaders around the world in order to promote “INNOVATION,” the key to solving global warming – will be held on 5 and 6 October under the theme Low-Carbon Innovation in a Time of Crises”. Don’t miss this opportunity to update your knowledge in this field!

METI’s Block Council for Promotion of Foreign Direct Investment in Japan  will be held between end of 2022 and March 2023. Interested foreign companies are invited to contact METI by 17 October.

We hope you stay positive and healthy during this difficult time.

What’s in the Media

  • Japan will run a new domestic tourism subsidy program from Oct 11 to late December as part of efforts to spur domestic tourism and revive the coronavirus-hit economy, tourism minister Tetsuo Saito said Monday.
The National Travel Discount will provide the equivalent of up to 11,000 yen in discounts and coupons per traveler per day, which can be used for meals, shopping and accommodation expenses.
The measure comes in line with a plan to remove the daily cap for overseas arrivals, currently set at 50,000, on Oct 11 as part of easing COVID-19 border control measures. (Japan Today)
  • Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida revealed a plan Thursday to make Japan’s tax break system for small-lot investment a permanent program to draw more individual assets into markets.
It is “essential” to establish a permanent tax exemption system for proceeds from investment, Kishida said in a speech delivered at the New York Stock Exchange, the world’s largest bourse, to encourage more foreign investment in Japan.
Kishida said such tax incentives are necessary because Japan has 2,000 trillion yen in personal financial assets but “only around 10 percent” is invested in stocks. (Japan Today)
  • Some 44% of major companies in Japan surveyed by the Mainichi Shimbun have revamped or are considering reviewing their employee transfer systems.
Remote working has become much more prevalent in Japan due to the coronavirus pandemic, and ways of working not tied to a specific location are gaining ground. This signals a major transformation of the conventional terms of employment in Japan, as even major firms take a hard look at systems allowing workers to live well outside of commuting distance from their office.
