EBC Newsletter – October 25, 2023

From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

On 16 November (15:00-20:00), the EBC Automotive Components and Aftermarket Committee, supported by AHK Japan, the Delegation of the EU to Japan and the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation, will organise a hybrid Digital Automotive Summit that will bring together industry, policy, and advocacy leaders of the Japanese and European Automotive Industry. Expanding and building on our speakers’ keynotes, we’ll discuss the industry’s future against the backdrop of an accelerated pace of digitalisation and increasingly feeble markets. What factors are tying our markets together? Is more collaboration among both stakeholders and geographies an avenue to future success? Best practices and insights will be shared leading to a panel discussion. We are looking forward to welcoming you online and in-person!

Another worthwhile Joint Hybrid Seminar on the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and its implication for Japanese companies will be organised by the Delegation of the European Union to Japan, the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan and the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation on 13 November (17:00-18:30)  The application of the CBAM has started this October with a transitional period that will last until end of 2025. In this seminar, the Director-General of DG TAXUD of the European Commission, will talk about the current status, future measures and responses, and discuss together with related parties of Japan.

The EBC team is looking forward to hearing from you soon,

Valerie Moschetti
EBC Chief Operating Officer

What’s in the Media

  • Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Monday he is preparing to take bold economic measures, including an income tax cut for households hit by inflation and tax breaks for companies to promote investment, in what’s seen as a move to lift his dwindling public support. In his speech to start a new Diet session, Kishida said it was time to shift from an economy of low cost, low wages and cost-cutting to one backed by growth led by sustainable wage hikes and active investment. • A government panel on Wednesday proposed replacing Japan’s controversial trainee program for foreigners with a new system with more flexibility and oversight to prevent human rights infringements, according its draft report. The panel called for enabling trainees who attain a certain level of skills and Japanese language ability after working for a year at one place to transfer to another within the same business sector, which is not allowed in principle under the present system. (Japan Today)
  • Japan has joined an international framework backed by cyber powers, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Israel, for software manufacturers to ensure security of their products against cyber-attacks, digital minister Taro Kono announced Tuesday. The 13 participating nations have compiled a guide emphasizing manufacturer accountability to encourage the creation of products that are secure by design and by default to protect customers.
