From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

As we embark on a new year full of opportunities, we are pleased to share with you our recent activities. The EBC attended a conference with the EU Ambassador and his team to learn about the new EU Commission’s policy priorities, celebrated international design innovation at the Czech Design Exhibition and attended the AHK Japan New Year’s Party. We’ve also included essential updates on EU import regulations and a unique career opportunity with the Ireland-Japan Chamber of Commerce (IJCC). These initiatives reflect our commitment to supporting the EU-Japan business relationship and creating new opportunities for growth.

The EU Ambassador Welcomes the EBC

On 21 January, the European Business Council, together with the members of its Board and its Committee Chairs, had the honour of attending a briefing and exchange of views organised by Ambassador Jean-Eric Paquet and his team at the EU Delegation in Tokyo.
After a warm welcome, Ambassador Paquet gave an overview of the global political situation, focusing on the impact of the new leaders of the European Union and Japan. Against a background of major geopolitical challenges in their respective regions, the EU and Japan continue to enjoy a strong partnership and a shared desire to strengthen their relationship. Ambassador Paquet then presented the European Commission’s policy orientations and projects for the next 5 years.
The meeting focused on areas of direct interest to the EBC Committees: industrial policy and competitiveness, green and clean transition, economic security and defence, agriculture, innovation and digitalisation. The participants had an invaluable opportunity to share their perspectives on behalf of the European business community in Japan.
We thank the EU delegation for their hospitality and look forward to continuing this fruitful partnership.

Czech Passionate and Noble Design Exhibition

The EBC was pleased to participate in the Czech Passionate and Noble Design Exhibition, held on 16-17 January at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tokyo. This exclusive event celebrated the exceptional craftsmanship and rich design heritage of the Czech Republic. Guests had the opportunity to explore high-quality products crafted by Czech designers, underscoring the country’s strong tradition of innovation and artistry. Speeches by the Czech Ambassador Martin Klučar and CCCIJ President Roman Behro highlighted the growing potential for economic collaboration between the Czech Republic and Japan. Notably, the upcoming Osaka Expo 2025 was emphasized as a critical milestone for expanding bilateral trade and investment opportunities.

AHK Japan’s New Year Party

On 15 January, the EBC joined AHK Japan’s “Shinnenkai” New Year’s Reception at HAPPO-EN in Tokyo. This event brought together business leaders from German and Japanese companies, providing an excellent platform to strengthen cross-border relationships and collaborations. Highlights of the event included inspiring speeches from Peter Löffelhardt, Head of Economic and Scientific Affairs at the German Embassy; AHK Japan’s President Hiroki Ishida; and CEO Marcus Schürmann. The traditional Kagami-Biraki ceremony added a festive touch, setting the tone for a productive year ahead. The EBC values such opportunities to connect, share insights, and explore new partnerships.

Important Information on EU Imports: ICS2

The Import Control System 2 (ICS2) is an advanced cargo information system designed to enhance security in the international transportation of goods and involved supply chain. All Economic Operators (EOs) bringing goods to or transiting through the EU are required to declare safety and security data via the Entry Summary Declaration (ENS). Based on the ENS, all goods are subject to safety and security risk analysis and better targeted controls.
ICS2 plays a pivotal role in identifying high-risk consignments while facilitating the legitimate flow of goods. For more details, visit the ICS2 webpage.

What’s in the Media

  • The science and technology ministry is drafting a policy in which the private sector will participate in the building and management of the successor to the International Space Station. The next space station is being developed by a U.S. company. The current ISS was an initiative of the United States and was completed in 2011 but is expected to cease operations in 2030 due to aging. (The Japan News)
  • Police and the Self-Defense Forces are expected to be required to obtain prior approval from an envisaged independent organ in principle when they take measures to penetrate and neutralize servers used in cyberattacks under a new system the government plans to introduce to prevent major cyberattacks, according to government sources. The government plans to introduce a new law and revise relevant existing laws to introduce the “active cyber defense” system. (The Japan News)
  • Japan is preparing 160 billion yen ($1 billion) in government support for its chip design industry, moving further upstream from its early focus on production in a bid to play catch-up with the U.S. and China. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will provide funding for projects by technology companies, startups and universities over up to five years, with an eye toward advanced chips for artificial intelligence, data centers, wireless base stations, self-driving vehicles and care robots, as well as power-saving designs.
