EBC Newsletter – February 28, 2024

From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

Our EBC committees are groups where companies can, among other activities, monitor the Japanese market, share best practices, discuss the impact of public policy on business, and engage with Japanese authorities when regulatory issues hinder the smooth operation of the market.

The EBC Food & Agriculture Committee will meet on 19 March at 17:00 at the EBC.
If your company is involved or interested in food and agriculture, we would like to invite you to join us. This meeting will provide a valuable opportunity for networking and collaboration within the Agrifood sector. Perhaps you import food or ingredients from Europe, either as a subsidiary or as an importer?
Over the years, our committee has addressed a number of critical issues, such as quotas, food additives, labelling, food contact, packaging etc. One of the most recent concerns is the longer delivery times due to the incidents in the Red Sea. Don’t hesitate to send us an email to [email protected]

On 22nd March (from 16:30; dinner afterwards), the EBC Automotive Components Committee is hosting KPMG’s automotive practice at the German Chamber of Commerce. Kohei Okuma (Senior Manager) & Hitoshi Inukai (Partner) will present their latest automotive industry survey with a tailor made deep dive into the Japanese OEM, suppliers & consumer sentiments.

On 1st March (14:00-15:00) the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tokyo, are pleased to invite you to an in-person “Conversation with H. E. Mr. Jan Lipavský, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, on the “Security Challenges and Global Outlook – 25 Years of the Czech Republic’s NATO Membership”.

What’s in the Media

  • The Japanese government plans to require companies with over 100 employees to set and disclose paternity leave targets from April 2025 to facilitate fathers’ involvement in child-rearing and allow parents to better manage work and family responsibilities, government sources said Monday. (Kyodo News+)
  • Japanese sake makers are facing a potential ban on imports into the European Union from 2030, when proposed EU regulations requiring the reuse and recycling of bottles and cans is planned to take effect. The problem stems from the logistical issues of collecting and washing uniquely sized sake bottles locally for the purpose of recycling. (The Japan News)
  • The government plans to expand the sea area where offshore wind turbines are allowed to be set up from within Japan’s territorial waters at present to its exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Positioning offshore wind power generation as important for promoting renewable energy, the government intends to support the adoption of such facilities, thus propelling decarbonization. It will submit a bill to the Diet to amend the relevant law as early as March. (The Japan News)
