From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

We continue to actively engage with European and Japanese stakeholders on issues that are strategically important for European business in Japan. This week, our activities focused on EU-Japan defence cooperation, trade and regulatory issues, and the business environment, while also highlighting two relevant partner events.

Advancing EU-Japan cooperation in defence

The EBC was pleased to participate in two important Belgian defence engagements in Tokyo, providing opportunities to strengthen dialogue and connections between European and Japanese stakeholders.

On 31 August, the EBC attended a reception marking the inauguration of the office of Colonel Laurent Petit, the first Belgian Defence Attaché to Japan, and welcoming him to his new role. The reception was held in the presence of H.E. Theo Francken, Minister for Defence and External Trade, and H.E. Antoine Evrard, Ambassador of Belgium to Japan.

On 1 September, the EBC joined the Belgian Defence Industry Seminar, bringing together Belgian and Japanese stakeholders to explore opportunities for greater industrial cooperation. The seminar highlighted Belgium’s expertise in advanced defence technologies, innovation and specialised capabilities.

Ahead of the seminar, Nikolaus Boltze, President of the EBC Board, met with Minister Francken to discuss the EBC’s work to strengthen EU-Japan cooperation in the defence industry, including through the EBC Defence & Security Committee and its efforts to connect European and Japanese business stakeholders.

The EBC looks forward to continuing to contribute to a stronger, more resilient and mutually beneficial EU-Japan defence partnership.

Dialogue on key issues for European business

On 3 September, the EBC held a productive meeting with the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), including Chief of Staff Becky Johnson and Director Catherine Tai.

The discussion covered a range of issues of importance to European business, including critical materials, trade facilitation and labour-related issues. The meeting provided a valuable opportunity to exchange perspectives on the challenges facing businesses today and to discuss how closer cooperation can support open, resilient and rules-based trade.

The EBC thanks Becky Johnson and Catherine Tai for the engaging discussion and for sharing their insights. We look forward to continuing this dialogue.

What’s in the Media

  • Japan’s financial watchdog plans to step up monitoring of overseas operations at major financial institutions, according to a draft of its annual financial administration policy obtained Saturday.  The move by the Financial Services Agency reflects difficulties in grasping the overall operations of large financial groups as they expand internationally, according to sources familiar with the matter. (The Mainichi)
  • The labor ministry revealed plans on Monday to review the calculation method to determine the percentage of employees with disabilities a company is legally required to have. The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry is leaning toward tightening the definition of people with disabilities who are keen to work, which, if realized, likely would slow the pace at which the statutory employment rate had been increasing. (The Japan News)
  • Japan will ease overtime regulations starting Tuesday in a move meant to help spur economic growth but criticized as a relapse into the country’s ingrained workaholic culture. The move comes after the government led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi — a self-proclaimed workaholic — adopted a growth strategy in July calling for revisions to the current oversight of work hours.
