From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

The mission of the EBC is mainly advocacy and lobbying for EBC members and stakeholders of the European Chambers of Commerce in Japan. We specialize in Japanese government relations and public affairs and offer a full range of government relations and related services: policy and issue monitoring, in-depth intelligence, strategic outreach, public affairs campaigns and strategic support for public tenders / public-sector sales. Advocacy and lobbying performed on behalf of European businesses as one is much more effective than on behalf of one single country.

In this period, the EBC is working hard to advocate against the (re-)entry ban to Japan for non-Japanese nationals, which affects both people and companies.

Our 23 Committees are devoted to improving the business environment for European companies in Japan. The EBC Committees highlight issues and make practical recommendations for how they should be resolved. A great portion of our recommendations will benefit all companies and consumers, independent of nationality.

In this Newsletter, we offer you the opportunity to get an insight on the Liquor Committee, in an article published by EuroBiz magazine.

Every year, our EBC White Papers emphasizes a significant number of issues hindering European business in Japan. Some of these issues are specific to European companies, but very many affect all companies, domestic and foreign, and serve only to delay new products, inflate costs, and restrict consumer choice. Please read our 2020 White Paper, ““Strengthening Partnerships, in crisis and opportunity alike”, published in July. An online EBC Briefing will be organized on August 20 to launch the 2020 White Paper, as explained below.

We already delivered the 2020 White Paper to MOFA, Keidanren and METI. We will continue our meetings with Japanese leaders to ensure a better business environment for European companies.

We wish you a good reading and hope you stay positive and healthy during this difficult time.

Valerie Moschetti
EBC Chief Operating Officer

The EBC Liquor Committee

The EU–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement has been a big push forward for the EBC Liquor Committee. Longstanding issues concerning tariffs on wine and geographical indication almost completely disappeared after the agreement came into effect in February 2019. Another issue, involving the alignment of lists of approved additives, has been partially resolved and is on course for full resolution. You can read more about the Liquor Committee in this article.

The EBC 2020 White Paper

In July, the EBC published in July its new report on the Japanese regulatory business environment. This year’s White Paper is called “Strengthening partnerships – in crisis and opportunity alike”. The opportunity is of course referring to the EU-Japan EPA that entered into force on February 1, 2019. Unfortunately, at the same time the COVID -19 crisis struck the world. We are, however, confident that with our recommendations, the European and Japanese economies and companies will continue to prosper.
