From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

We hope you spent a great Golden Week and you feel fresh and relaxed for the coming months!

On 27 April, we held an EBC Briefing on Tax Transparency in the Digital Economy, with Mr. Artur Olszewski from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). His presentation covered two OECD tax transparency initiatives aimed at addressing recent developments in the digital economy.
The first initiative, the Model Reporting Rules for Digital Platforms, was developed in response to the rapid growth of the sharing and gig economy and requires digital platforms to collect and report to tax administration information on income realised by platform sellers. The second part of the presentation focused on crypto assets, and more precisely on the ongoing work of the OECD on the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF), which provides for the reporting and exchange of tax information on transactions in Crypto-Assets.
If you wish to get further details, EuroBiz magazine will publish an article in its May issue.

This month, several events could be of interest to you:

We hope you stay positive and healthy during this difficult time.

Webinar on Promoting Research and Innovation in Hydrogen: Opportunities for Cooperation between the EU and Japan

Wednesday, 25 May 25 2022
JST 16:00-18:15
Simultaneous interpretation EN-JP
Agenda: here
Registration to participate: here (ZOOM)

Hydrogen has many possible applications across industry, transport, power and other sectors. There is a wide consensus that hydrogen is a key priority to achieve the European Green Deal and Europe’s clean energy transition. It offers a solution to decarbonize industrial processes and economic sectors as it does not emit CO2 and cause no pollution when used. However, at present, hydrogen is largely produced from fossil fuels, resulting in the release of CO2. Renewable and low-carbon hydrogen are not yet cost competitive compared to fossil-based hydrogen.

Almost all EU Member States have included plans for clean hydrogen in their national Energy and Climate Plans. Some have already adopted national hydrogen strategies or are in the process of adopting them. However, deploying hydrogen in Europe and worldwide faces big challenges that countries cannot address alone. This requires not only substantial investment and enabling regulatory framework, but foremost research and innovation into breakthrough technologies and international cooperation.

In this event, experts from the EU and Japan will share the latest developments in policies and practices of promoting research and innovation in hydrogen. They will also discuss opportunities for cooperation in hydrogen research and innovation between the EU and Japan.
