From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

Strong business relationships are built on more than trade: they require dialogue, trusted networks and a clear understanding of where new opportunities are emerging.

This week, the EBC highlights the importance of institutional engagement between Europe and Japan, invites members to discuss the future of automotive cooperation, and shares opportunities to connect with the wider international business community. We also feature a partner event relevant to companies exploring investment opportunities in Japan.

Celebrating Spain-Japan Relations

On 8 October, the EBC attended the reception hosted by H.E. Iñigo de Palacio España, Ambassador of Spain to Japan, to celebrate Spain’s National Day.

The event brought together diplomatic, political and business leaders, underlining the importance of strong Spain-Japan relations and continued Europe-Japan cooperation. For the EBC, such engagements help strengthen institutional relationships and support a favourable business environment for European companies operating in Japan.

Partner Call for Host Companies: Vulcanus in Japan 2027-2028

The EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation invites companies in Japan to host a European science or engineering student in the 2027-2028 edition of Vulcanus in Japan. In 2027, the programme marks its 30th anniversary.

Each year, students are selected from 400-800 applicants across the EU. They complete two months of intensive Japanese language training in Tokyo, then a six-month internship at their host company. Since 1997, the programme has built a network of almost 800 alumni across Europe and Japan.

For European companies in Japan, hosting a student is a way to bring young EU engineering talent into their Japanese operations.

The call opens on 15 October and closes on 15 December 2026..

What’s in the Media

  • The Japanese government is considering including railways in defense-related expenditure as part of revisions to three key security documents by year-end, sources close to the matter said Sunday. The aim is to secure routes for supplying materials to Self-Defense Forces units and transporting defense equipment in the event of an emergency, strengthening the ability to sustain combat operations, the sources said. (Kyodo News)
  • The health ministry is set to establish a system to ensure a stable supply of critical, life-saving medical devices. The initiative is expected to cover such devices as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines, which use rare earth elements, and ventilators, for which there were supply concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry plans to designate specific devices and establish measures to secure alternatives before an emergency occurs. It also plans to provide subsidies to companies to cover the costs of increased production and stockpiling. (The Japan News)
  • The government plans to start discussions surrounding the deployment of nuclear-powered submarines to the Self-Defense Forces, according to several government and ruling party sources. This deployment objective is to be written into three key national security documents, which includes the National Security Strategy, that are all set to be updated by the end of this year.
