Dear Friends of the EBC,

On 30 January (4:00pm, EBC office), the EBC will hold a hybrid conference on “The Japanese Economy: Strategies to Cope with a Shrinking and Ageing Population” with Dr. Randall S. Jones, former Head of Japan/Korea Desk, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The EBC has a long history with Dr. Jones, as he was responsible for the Economic Survey of Japan and where the EBC was also able to give its input on the economic and trade policies of Japan from the European industry perspective.

On 1 February 2023 (5:30pm, EU Delegation), the EBC Legal Service Committee will organise an briefing on “The Role of the Legal Profession in Addressing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Issues in an Ever-Shifting World”. It will have several presenters, not only from the Legal Services Committee itself, but also from externals experts giving their views on ESG from a government, legal and private industry perspective.

What’s in the Media

  • The government is considering a law revision to introduce a special measure to get more people to link their bank accounts that are used to receive pensions, child allowances and other public benefits to their My Number personal identification numbers.
    The government hopes to realize the law revision at this year’s regular session of the Diet slated to start Jan. 23. (The Japan News)
  • The Japanese government plans to work with domestic firms to test new international supply routes as soon as March, as it aims to diversify freight options in response to recent supply chain instability highlighted by the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine. (The Mainichi)
  • West Japan Railway, known as JR West, plans to introduce biofuel in all its diesel trains, which operate mainly on local lines, by around 2030, a move that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions on nonelectrified sections, which account for nearly 40% of the company’s lines excluding bullet train lines. (News on Japan)
  • From robots to artificial intelligence and blockchain-based marketing, technological innovation is increasingly being harnessed in Japan to improve farming methods and create a more sustainable industry.
    Among those embracing the digital trend is Metagri-Labo, a community launched in March 2022 that aims to merge agriculture and blockchain technology to increase farming revenues while revitalizing regional areas. (The Mainichi)
