From the EBC

Dear Friends of the EBC,

The EBC committees are very dynamic, and it is important to communicate about their activity. If your company wishes to join one of them, please contact us!

On 24 August, the EBC Medical Equipment and IVD Committee organised a lecture on Germany’s insurance and medical reimbursement systems and Mr. Hiroaki Tabata (LDP), Member of the House of Representatives, communicated on “Looking Ahead to the 2024 Revision of Medical Fees.” For further details, you can read this article (EN / JP).

On 30 August, the EBC Logistics & Freight Committee  visited Narita International Airport (NAA) to get a tour of the current facilities with a focus on the logistics capabilities. NAA also gave the committee an insight into the changes that the airport will undergo during the next couple of years: digitalisation to cope with labour constraints, a new cargo terminal, a landing strip that will be extended, and a completely new runway. The members also had the chance to see JAL Cargo’s terminal.

On 4 September, the EBC met the European Commission data flow negotiating team. The EU and Japan are holding the fifth round of negotiations in Tokyo on an agreement on data flows between our two regions. The participating EBC members had the chance to convey the opinions and requests of the EBC in this field. The Commission also gave its view on the negotiations and hoped that they would be concluded by the end of the year. With the ever-increasing data exchange between the EU and Japan, and with a large portion of EBC companies using European resources to process data gathered in Japan, it is important that the agreement will make certain that we can continue to send data from Japan to Europe and vice versa.

What’s in the Media

  • The government plans to develop a new method to measure plant resources across the country with the aim of accurately determining Japan’s CO2 absorption levels. The Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry; the Environment Ministry; and the Forestry Agency are working together on the method, and have been recruiting private companies, universities and research institutes to participate in the project since July. (The Japan News)
  • The government has decided to double its current EV charger installation target to 300,000 by 2030. With EVs growing in popularity around the world, the government hopes the increased availability of charging stations across the nation will encourage a similar trend in Japan. (The Japan News)
  • Japan’s prices and wages, which remained stagnant for many years, have started to move, a government white paper said Tuesday. Japan must not miss the opportunity to end deflation, which has continued to plague the country since the 1990s, said the Annual Report on the Japanese Economy and Public Finance 2023, submitted to a cabinet meeting by economic and fiscal policy minister Shigeyuki Goto.
