On 27 May, we had the pleasure of attending the annual event of the Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA). The audience learned about the robust trend of electrification in Japan, with imported vehicles featuring cutting-edge technology leading the way in this significant paradigm shift. The EBC and JAIA have a longstanding and fruitful partnership aimed at enhancing the regulatory environment for motor vehicles in Japan, particularly for the European industry. A prime example of our collaborative efforts is the EBC White Paper, which is drafted with the invaluable assistance of JAIA. This document plays a critical role in advocating for regulatory improvements and fostering innovation within the automotive sector. |

| On 28 May, we were present at the annual event of the Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies (SJAC). The event featured insightful speeches from SJAC representatives, METI Minister Ken Sato, MEXT Minister Masahito Moriyama, the Vice Minister of the MOD, and the Parliamentary Secretary from the Cabinet Office. We met representatives across Japanese industry, academia, and government, as well as several members of the EBC Defence and Security Committee. With Japan’s defence budget set to double over the next five years, both domestic and European defence industries are eager to provide top-notch solutions for Japan. To this end, the EBC and SJAC are maintaining close contact to explore potential collaborations. Exciting opportunities are already emerging for our members to connect, both in Japan and overseas.

| On 28 May, the EBC Sustainability Committee, with the assistance of Climate Fresk, organised an impactful workshop on climate change. Facilitated by the inspiring Shalyn Wilkins and Chris Lucas, who are currently cycling across Asia, the workshop provided a unique educational experience. Climate Fresk is an innovative workshop game based on 42 cards derived from IPCC scientific reports and raising awareness about climate change. A big thank you to Shalyn and Chris for leading this enlightening session, and to Stéfan Le Dû, our committee Chair, for organizing the event. |

| Finally, I would like to inform you that the 2024 Summer Cocktail Joint Networking event will be organised by the Spanish Chamber in collaboration with all the other participating chambers on July 11th! - The European Union and Japan have been strengthening their security and defense cooperation. Ahead of the EU’s Schuman Security and Defence Forum in Brussels, in which Japan was to participate as a partner country, EU Ambassador to Japan Jean-Eric Paquet contributed the following piece to The Japan News. (The Japan News)
- Japan enacted revised laws on Friday mandating companies to enhance support measures for employees raising children, including facilitating more flexible use of teleworking and shorter working hours, as part of efforts to combat the country’s declining birthrate. (The Mainichi)
- Japan aims to work with ASEAN to train 100,000 highly skilled digital professionals in the fields of artificial intelligence and semiconductors over the next five years, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Thursday. Kishida also said in a speech in Tokyo that the second ministerial meeting of the Japan-led Asia Zero Emission Community framework, which involves Australia and Association of Southeast Asian Nations members excluding Myanmar, will take place in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta in August.
